Tarma, Peru - The IGSA South American Championships got underway yesterday at the Hotel Los Portales Tarma, in Tarma, Peru. Tarma is a beautiful city where you walk amongst the Peruvians while seeing a lot of the culture and the beautiful family traditions.
Friday was reserved for free riding and learning the track. The track is 3km in length with many curves and four hairpins that pushed the riders skills to the limit.
On Friday evening there was a reception for the athletes and the media at the beautiful Hotel Los Portales. The Hotel gives its’ name to the event and accommodated all of the riders.
After uncertain weather on Friday when there were threats of rain at certain moments, Sunday dawned with a beautiful sun and heat. It was perfect conditions for qualifying.
The activities began directly with individual runs for qualifying times. Qualifying runs were made by 63 riders from Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Venezuela and the United States.
In the first round Douglas Silva from Brazil had the best time with 3:03.44. This set the official track record for this first year as an IGSA event. Canadian Kevin Reimer was second with 3:06.21 and fellow Canadian Dillon Stephens was thirdswith 3:07.74. James Kelly from the United States followed close behind with 3:07.79 in fourth. Brazilians Ricardo Reis and Juliano Cassemiro were fifth and sixth with 3:09.10 and 3:11.63 respectively. Felipe Málaga was the best Peruvian in seventh with the time of 3:12.19. Canadian Hugh Johnson rounded out the eight best times with 3:13.14.
On the second qualifying run Silva became ill due to the intense heat and altitude and couldn’t finish his run. Reimer improved his first time with a 3:04.51 but it wasn’t enough to pass Silva staying in second place. All the other riders had slower times maintaining their positions from the first run.
Sunday’s forecast is for good weather. Practice runs will be held in the morning followed by elimination heats in the afternoon.

Tarma é uma bela cidade, encrustada no meio dos andes peruanos, onde pode se ver muito da cultura e tradiçoes deste belo pais.
A sexta feira foi reservada para free ride e reconhecimento da pista. A ladeira conta com diversas curvas e hairpins. Dessa longa ladeira foi escolhido um trecho de 3km com velocidade media a alta, muitas curvas e 4 hairpins que exigiram muita técnica dos riders.
A noite houve uma recepção para os atletas e a mídia no belo hotel Los Portales, que dá nome ao evento e acomodou todos os riders.
Após o tempo instavel da sexta feira, quando houve ameaças de chuvas em certos momentos, o sabádo amanheceu com um lindo sol e calor, ótimo para as qualificatórias.
As atividades começaram direto com as descidas individuais para tomada de tempo. Foram tomados os tempos de 63 riders do Peru, Brasil, Argentina, Canadá, Chile, Venezuela e USA.
Na primeira rodada Douglas Silva fez o melhor tempo com 3:03,44 e marcou o recorde da pista em seu primeiro ano como etapa da IGSA. Logo em seguida veio Kevin Reimer com 3:06,21 e Dillon com 3:07,74. James Kelly ficou em quarto com 3:07,79 seguido dos brasileiros Ricardo dos Reis com 3:09,10 e Juliano Cassemiro com 3:11,63. Felipe Malaga foi o melhor peruano ficando em sétimo com o tempo de 3:12,19 e o canadense Hugh fechou os oito melhores tempos com 3:13,14.
Na segunda rodada de tempos Douglas Silva caiu devido ao forte calor e a altitude e não pode terminar sua descida. Kevin melhorou seu primeiro tempo fazendo 3:04,51 mas não foi o bastante para passar Douglas se mantendo em Segundo lugar. Todos os demais riders pioraram seus tempos mantendo a classificação da primeira rodada.
Para amanha a previsão é de tempo bom e serao realizadas práticas pela manha e as baterias principais a tarde.
